Specialist Foster Carers for children moving from residential care

We are currently working to recruit additional foster carers for a Specialist Fostering Scheme that we are developing. The scheme is designed to facilitate young people moving to foster carer from children's home accommodation.

The children leaving residential care will either be moving because they have made good progress in residential care and are ready to move on or they may have been originally placed in residential care because there were suitably skilled carers available at the time that they presented as needing a placement. Most children needing placement will be age 11-17 years of age.

We are currently focused on  seeking specialist carers for 4 specific children who currently live in the Oxfordshire, Bracknell and Birmingham areas. Our hope is that by targeting recruitment on these areas, the young people will be able to remain in their current schools.

To become one of our specialist carers, you will need:

  • Suitable accommodation
  • Significant previous professional experience of working with difficult young people or adults with complex needs (e.g. youth work, education, residential, youth connexions or youth exclusion, social work, prison service, police service, military or experience of fostering these young people
  • You will have formal child care qualifications or other qualification recognised by the scheme or be willing to complete a course of study to gain such qualifications
  • Openness to learning and a willingness and commitment to take up initial and ongoing foster carer training
  • Ability to cope with and manage risk and to provide care for children who may behave in ways that puts themselves or others at risk
  • Resilience and the tenacity- the ability to `keep going` and to see things through not be overwhelmed when the going gets tough.
  • Commitment- the ability to complete what one has started.
  • Patience including an ability to appreciate that personal change does not happen fast and an ability to recognise, appreciate and build up small incremental steps of progress
  • Fuller details within application pack
